Twister (also known as Tornado) is an 2020 American computer-animated disaster adventure film directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It's an animation reboot to the 1996 film of its same name. It will be produced by Movie Land Animation Studios, Panko and Panda Studios, and Tencent Pictures. The film stars Tom Cruise, Jamie Chung, Hailee Steinfeld, Jason Sudeikis, James Adomian and Seth MacFarlane.
The film title had its world premiere at Dolby Theatre on February 21, 2020. The film will be released on March 6, 2020 in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures before its closed and will be released on digital and Netflix, due to an COVID-19 pandemic.
The film's financial shortcomings were attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in theaters around the globe being closed. Like several other films released in March, it was made available digitally two weeks after its theatrical release.
A sequel film will be release on July 29, 2022.

Development
On December 2, 2010, it was announced that it will be pre-production and in 2016, it was announced that it will make the animation remake for the 1996 film, Twister, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller is set to direct the film, with the screenplay from Anne-Marie Martin, Nicholas Stoller, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger & it will be produced by Movie Land Animation Studios, Panko and Panda Studios, and Tencent Pictures.
Movie Land Animation Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures had already begun the process of starting development of movies with budgets of around $320 million. The intellectual property for these films was meant to be supplied by Movie Land Animation Studios and Warner Animation Group among others and included Storks, Penguinopolis, Smallfoot, Sarcastics and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part had been approaching the original crew from the television series to make a high-profile, animated theatrical feature-length film adaptation and had long wanted to partner with Warner Bros. Pictures to release the sequel film given the network's extraordinary legacy in the world of animation, including some of the most enduring characters on cable television history.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller agreed to make a feature film version of the show with the promise it would be the first of a planned trilogy. During development stages of the film, he and his co-director Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery and co-writer Jill Culton intended to revisit some of the greatest films of the time, with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Voltron: Legendary Defender, Wonder Park and Abominable having the core inspirations for the film.
Casting
In April 2018, the majority of the voice cast was announced. Tom Cruise, Jamie Chung, Hailee Steinfeld, Jason Sudeikis, James Adomain and Seth MacFarlane joined the cast of the film.
Visual effects
Visual effects and animation for the film was done at Movie Land Digital Production Services in San Francisco, California. The animation of the human characters were done via motion capture. The Chinese visual effects and animation was produced by Panko and Panda Studios in Shanghai, China.
Music
The score for the film was composed by Henry Jackman. Both singles were played in the film's end credits.
Release
The film title will be released on March 6, 2020 in IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema and 2D theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures. A new short film titled Lucky Bear, featuring Matthew McConaughey, was released before the feature film.
Marketing
In May 2019, Warner Bros. and Movie Land Animation Studios released the teaser poster on May 11. Three days later, they released the teaser trailer for the film that was released in theaters before The Crown.
In August 2019, the first trailer was released on August 13, before The Angry Birds Movie 2, features a new characters from the film.
In December 2019, Warner Bros. and Movie Land Animation Studios released the theatrical poster on December 19, 2019. On Christmas Day, they released the final trailer for the film before Spies in Disguise in theaters.
Merchandise
The video game was released on March 3, 2020 was released by Warner Bros. Games on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, the rating by the ESRB for the video game is rated "E10+ for Cartoon Violence and Mild Action".
Home media
Twister will receive an early digital release on the night of March 20, 2020 and will be available for Netflix subscribers on April 3, 2020 in the United States. The announcement followed Netflix's earlier than planned released of Cool Girls on Netflix due to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. However, Twister will be available for purchase on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD on May 19, 2020 by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. A Blu-ray 3D version will be release in on week after May 19, exclusively at Best Buy, which includes Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Code.
Reception
Box office
On March 10, 2020, Twister has received $244.4 million budget in the United States and Canada. As of March 6, Twister is released alongside Onward, The Way Back and the wide expansion of Emma, and was projected to gross $17–20 million from 4,200 theaters in its opening weekend. It went on to debut to $20.9 million, finishing first at the box office and marking the best opening for an original animated film of 2020. It then made $12.1 million on its first day, including $2 million from Thursday night previews.
Critical response
On March 3, Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a "83%" and wrote "Since in China that the effects is quite amazing, but the music, it's just an unknown music."
Sequel
A sequel film to Twister is announced on Apr 16, 2020, with Kenneth Branagh is set to direct. The film is set to be released on July 29, 2022 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
