Romeo and Juliet (also known as Romeo & Juliet, and marketed as such on the US home video release) is an upcoming American computer-animated romantic fantasy tragedy film based on the works of its same name by William Shakespeare. It was produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Movie Land Animation Studios.

The film title will be released digitally via video on demand and on Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray on June 5, 2020. It was initially set to play in theaters on the same date, but the theatrical release was canceled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The sequel film, were Romeo and Juliet is alive, entitled Romeo and Juliet 2, will be released on April 15, 2022.

Production

Development

In November 2014, where follows the November 2014 hacking of Sony's computers, Movie Land Animation Studios and Sony Pictures Animation announced an untitled Romeo and Juliet animated film by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were leaked. It was announced that it will launch an upcoming Romeo and Juliet film by Sony Pictures Animation. By June 2016, Lord had written a script for the film, and the studio chose Bob Persichetti to direct.

Animation

The computer animation pipeline with traditional hand-drawn comic book techniques is created by Movie Land Digital Production Services. Animation work was completed in October 2018. Unlike the previous films, this film will be computer animated, but will capture the feel of traditional animation similar to The Peanuts Movie, The Lego Movie, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

It was announced that MLDPS at Home is established on February 12, 2020 in case of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Music

Henry Jackman, James Newton Howard, Lorne Balfe and Daniel Pemberton, who is collaborated on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Carmen Sandiego, announced that it will compose the film score.

Marketing

In the Movie Land Disc release of Grossology, the teaser promo was released. The teaser trailer was released on Christmas Day. The first trailer was released on March 6, 2020 before Onward in theaters. The final trailer, marketed as such on the US home video release, was released online on May 20, 2020.

Release

Home media

The film was initially set to play the movie in theaters on June 5, 2020 in IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, and ScreenX theaters by Sony Pictures Releasing, but the theatrical release was canceled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. On April 19, 2020, it was announced that Sony will keep the release date alongside the 2019–20 COVID-19 pandemic on cinema. On May 20, 2020, it was announced on April 22, 2020 that Sony would release Romeo and Juliet through home video release and video on demand on the same date instead of in theaters. It was also scheduled to be released on Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray on the same day as the digital and Movies Anywhere release. A DVD version will be released on September 15, 2020.

Sequel

A sequel to Romeo and Juliet is announced on November 19, 2019. It will be released on April 15, 2022 in theaters rather than the first film.
