Portfolio Entertainment Inc. is a Canadian production and distribution company based in Toronto, Ontario, with additional offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Tokyo, and Beijing. Founded in 1987 by former CEO Frank Agrama as Portfolio Advertising Studio, the company originally specialized in producing television commercials before expanding into television series and international film sales.
The company is active in both production and distribution, selling programming and feature films to more than 90 countries worldwide. Approximately two-fifths of its catalog consists of in-house productions including its three original animated features: The Christmas Dinosaur, Fixed, and KPop Demon Hunters. In 1997, marking its 10th anniversary, the company officially rebranded as Portfolio Entertainment Inc. The new branding was first used in promotional materials that same year, though an updated on-screen logo did not debut until 1998.
In 1998, Portfolio signed a landmark distribution agreement with The Walt Disney Company, allowing it to distribute Disney’s output — particularly animated feature films — in Canada and its territories, as well as handle certain non-U.S. international sales. In 2013, they bought the worldwide distribution rights to former indepedent film distributor Orion Pictures' animated features after Orion shut down earlier that year due to bankruptcy. Most films produced by WildBrain Entertainment (with some exceptions) are currently distributed by Portfolio inside of Canada, as well as those of fellow Canadian distributor Porchlight Entertainment ever since they got acquired by Portfolio in 2014.
